Profit From Garage Sales, Over & Over?
By Steve J Carter

People who run regular garage sales know they can be a great way to make money. Some people even go around to second hand shops and buy things to then resell at their own garage sales and actually make a profit. Others, while acknowledging that garage sales can certainly be profitable, can't bring themselves to have a stream of strangers coming to their home. This reticence can be used to your advantage and it indicates an additional source of income for those who are prepared to hold garage sales.

If you are happy to run garage sales, you can increase your earnings simply by selling other people's items for them for a commission. Some people who do this charge a whopping thirty to fifty percent of the sale price and people are willing to pay it.

Of course, if you decide to sell items for other people at your garage sale, you will have to be very organised in order to avoid conflict and mistakes. Every item will have to be meticulously labelled so that you can easily track it and pay correct money to the owner or return it to the right owner. You will also need to have a good idea of a reasonable asking price for items. Many owners will tell you the price they want, however, there is no point taking up space with items with too high an asking price because they are unlikely to sell. After all, people who frequent garage sales are looking for bargains.

To get your business going, you can start small and invite people in your street or local area if they would like to participate. If you include friends, you will need to be very clear from the outset that it is a business arrangement and you will be charging commission. Make sure they are okay with this because friendships have been lost over much less. Once you hold a few garage sales, word of mouth will kick in and you will begin to have people approaching you.

You can advertise your garage sale in local newspapers and on flyers that can be delivered to local letterboxes. You can also put a sign out the front of your house and make identification easier by tying red balloons or similar to your letter box or front fence. Some local councils will even let you put up temporary signs on telegraph poles and some shops will be happy to put a notice in their window.

Once you have made the decision to use garage sales to make money, you will find that you will notice opportunities to make money and advertise your sale that you otherwise would have ignored. You will develop a sixth sense for success. For some people, running a garage sale is a way of getting rid of clutter and making a bit of money on the side. For you, running a garage sale can be a way of earning income while at the same time providing a valuable service to people in your community.
